"When I'm commissioned to create an image, I'm typically given a subject that already looks good on its own. My role as an image-maker is to refine and enhance, smoothing out perceived imperfections and highlighting the season's latest objects of desire.
These visual "elevations" take many forms-whether through elaborate lighting and staging or the meticulous surface work of retouching that finalizes my commissioned images.
What fascinates me is how, when removed from their original context as enhancements or corrections, the traces of retouching become strange, unconscious abstractions.
Stripped of their functional intent, these digital marks transform into material traces-both purposeful and somehow disjointed, bearing a sense of intention even as their original purpose is forgotten."- Matthew Donaldson
